10% of the U.S. women have polycystic ovary syndrome. It usually has an impact on women in their 20-30’s but can occur in girls as young as 11 years old.
The cause of PCOS is several – genetic, and environmental factors can contribute to this syndrome.
A main factor of PCOS is a hormonal imbalance. Due to the imbalance of hormones, women with PCOS, their bodies usually make more male hormones (androgens) than normal. These high levels of male hormones have a negative affect the phase of the the eggs during ovulation.
A new key factor for polycystic ovary syndrome is insulin. Insulin, the hormone that controls the levels of sugar, carbohydeates , and other foods into energy for the body. Too many women with PCOS have too much insulin in their bodies because they have problems using the insulin. The increase in insulin can increase production of the male hormones.
